Today’s the day: Apple just unveiled its new iPhone models for 2020. For starters, the Cupertino company introduced the standard iPhone 12 and the very compact iPhone 12 mini. Not only are both of these iPhones equipped with 5G connectivity, they are using OLED screens as well.

That’s right, it seems like Apple is moving away from LCD panels with its latest iPhones. The standard iPhone 12 sports a 6.1-inch 2532 x 1170 Super Retina XDR OLED display, while the iPhone 12 mini has a 5.4-inch 2340 x 1080 OLED panel. On top of that, the screen of both phones are protected by a new “Ceramic Shield” glass, which is said to be four times more resistant to breaking.

These are all great upgrades, but the wide notch at the top of the screen is still retained, unfortunately enough.

Anyway, let’s move on to performance. The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini are powered by the new A14 Bionic chip, which is touted to be the “fastest chip on a smartphone.” That’s quite a lofty claim, but given that past Apple chips have always proved to be extremely capable, we’re inclined to take the company’s word for it.

In the camera department, both of these iPhones have a dual camera system made up of a 12MP f/1.6 primary sensor and a 12MP f/2.4 ultra-wide angle camera. Thanks to Apple’s computational photography, the company promises that these two phones – despite the rather pedestrian hardware – can capture great-looking shots.

The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini are meant to be affordable alternatives to the more premium iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max, so naturally, they don’t cost quite as much. For the Malaysian market, the iPhone 12 mini retails from RM3,399, while the iPhone 12 starts at RM3,899.

As usual, even though the Malaysian pricing of the two new iPhones have been revealed, it remains to be seen exactly when they will be available locally.
