Samsung Galaxy S20 FE Official; Malaysian Market Getting Snapdragon 865 Version for RM3,399
September 23, 2020 Andrew Cheng

The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE is official, and as expected, this “Fan Edition” is a (slightly) more affordable take on the Korean company’s flagship S20 series. Even though it sits at a lower price point, the S20 FE actually retains quite a bit of its higher-end siblings’ hardware, including a fast 120Hz screen and 5G connectivity.

Speaking of 5G support, only the 5G version of the Galaxy S20 FE will be offered in Malaysia. This means that we are getting the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 version of the flagship smartphone; great news for those who aren’t fans of the Exynos 990. If you’re wondering, yes, there is still an Exynos 990 variant of the new device, but it only supports 4G networks.

Its processor aside, the Galaxy S20 FE also features a 6.5-inch 2400 x 1080 Super AMOLED display with a fast 120Hz refresh rate. Although it is now sporting only a Full HD screen with a conventional flat screen instead of a curved panel, at least the high refresh rate is retained. It’s a far more important feature for a more pleasant user experience.

In the camera department, the Galaxy S20 FE comes with a triple camera system. It’s made up of a 12MP f/1.8 primary sensor, a 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide angle shooter, and an 8MP f/2.4 telephoto lens. Naturally, this camera configuration isn’t quite as sophisticated as the other S20 smartphones, but given Samsung’s track record when it comes to photography, we’re confident the S20 FE will still be able to capture great-looking shots.

Another area where this phone sacrifices to lower its asking price is the build material. Just like the Galaxy Note 20, the S20 FE has a polycarbonate (read: plastic) back panel. Obviously, this means it wouldn’t feel quite as premium, but if you plan to slap a case on the phone anyway, this is a non-issue.

Other specifications of the Galaxy S20 FE include a 32MP f/2.2 selfie camera, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of expandable storage – it supports microSD cards up to 1TB – a generous 4,500mAh battery, an optical fingerprint sensor under the screen, as well as an IP68 rating.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE will be available for pre-order in Malaysia tomorrow (24 September) at 10AM for RM3,399 here until 8 October. It’s worth noting that this is actually RM100 more than the launch price of the standard S20, though you do get a Snapdragon 865 chip and 5G support with the S20 FE – features not found on the S20.
