Sony just introduced its latest flagship smartphone, the Sony Xperia 5 II. Compared to the Japanese company’s previous high-end device, the Xperia 1 II, this new flagship is arguably more attractive. Not only does it come with a faster 120Hz OLED screen, it’s also a lot more compact.

The Xperia 5 II sports a 6.1-inch 2520 x 1080 OLED screen with a tall 21:9 aspect ratio, so it’s actually very similar in size to the equally compact Xperia 10 II with a slightly smaller 6.0-inch panel. Granted, this doesn’t sound quite as impressive as the Xperia 1 II’s bigger and sharper 6.5-inch 4K OLED panel, but the Xperia 5 II’s much faster 120Hz display more than make up for this, in our opinion.

Plus, in a flagship landscape dominated by much bigger smartphones, it’s refreshing to see Sony release a high-end device like the Xperia 5 II in a compact form factor.

Aside from that, under the hood of the Xperia 5 II is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chip. Of course, it would’ve been great if it was powered by the newer and faster Snapdragon 865+ SoC, but the former is still a very capable processor that will be able to deliver flagship-tier performance. Plus, you also get 5G connectivity.

Other specifications of the Xperia 5 II include a triple camera system (12MP f/1.7 primary + 12MP f/2.4 telephoto + 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide angle), an 8MP f/2.0 front-facing camera, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of expandable storage, a 4,000mAh battery, IP65/68 water resistance, and surprise surprise, a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The Sony Xperia 5 II will hit store shelves on 4 December in the US with a $949 price tag (about RM3,925). Malaysian availability of the flagship phone has not been confirmed yet, but given that it’s already listed on Sony Malaysia’s website, we reckon it will eventually be offered here.
