Redmi just unveiled the successors to the Redmi K20 series. Aptly dubbed Redmi K30, there are two devices in the lineup: the K30 5G, and the more affordable K30 4G. One of the most noteworthy upgrades these two phones receive is the display: it is now a 120Hz panel.

That’s right, both the Redmi K30 5G and K30 4G feature a 6.67-inch 2400 x 1080 IPS display with a fast 120Hz refresh rate. Unfortunately, it’s no longer sporting an AMOLED panel, but you do get a faster 120Hz screen now. In our opinion, it’s a good trade-off.

Another thing you don’t get with the new K30 phones is an all-screen design. Instead, Redmi decided to go with a hole-punch display for the new devices. It looks very familiar too: the oblong-shaped cutout is placed at the top right corner of the phone, just like the Samsung Galaxy S10+.

Similarity aside, the cutout houses two selfie cameras. One is a 20MP primary shooter, while the other one is a 2MP depth sensor. On the back, both phones have a quad camera system made up of a 64MP f/1.9 main shooter, an 8MP f/2.2 ultra-wide angle camera, a 2MP f/2.4 depth sensor, and a 5MP f/2.4 macro lens (2MP for the 4G model).

When it comes to performance, the K30 5G is naturally the more powerful option. It’s powered by the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset, which has an integrated 5G modem. On top of that, it’s also built on a 7nm process, making it more power-efficient than the Snapdragon 730G chipset of the K30 4G – the latter is an 8nm processor.

Curiously, unlike their predecessors, the K30 5G and K30 4G do not have an in-screen fingerprint sensor. Instead, they have a side-mounted fingerprint sensor that seems to double as the power button. While a physical sensor doesn’t sound quite as impressive as an in-screen solution, the former is still the faster and more accurate option.

Other specifications of both K30 phones include a 4,500mAh battery with support for 30W fast charging (27W for the 4G variant), 6GB or 8GB of RAM, up to 256GB of expandable storage, and MIUI 11 based on Android 10 out of the box.

At the moment, the Redmi K30 5G and K30 4G are only available in China, and as expected, they are priced very competitively. The K30 4G starts at 1,599 Chinese yuan (about RM945), while the K30 5G retails from only 1,999 yuan (approximately RM1,180).

Hopefully, the Redmi K30 smartphones will make it to other markets in the near future. Although they no longer feature notch-less, AMOLED screens – not to mention in-screen fingerprint sensors – the addition of 120Hz refresh rate and 5G support are good trade-offs.
