Illegear Announces Onyx Pro & Selenite Pro Gaming Laptops; Offers 240Hz or 4K OLED Display
December 4, 2019 Andrew Cheng

Illegear just added two new gaming laptops to its product lineup: the 15.6-inch Illegear Onyx Pro, and the bigger 17.3-inch Illegear Selenite Pro. These are touted to be Illegear’s “cream of the crop” gaming laptops, and the Onyx Pro is especially interesting, weighing merely 1.55kg with a slim 18mm chassis.

You read that right. Despite its beefy hardware, the Onyx Pro tips the scales at only 1.55kg, which is very, very impressive for a gaming laptop of this calibre. On top of that, measuring only 18mm thin, it’s almost as slim as the Acer Predator Triton 500; the latter is ever so slightly thinner at 17.9mm.

As for the Selenite Pro, it’s also quite light and thin for a 17.3-inch laptop: it weighs 2kg with a 19mm case.

Dimensions aside, the Onyx Pro’s 15.6-inch screen can be configured with two options: a fast 240Hz 1920 x 1080 IPS panel, or a vibrant Samsung-made 4K AMOLED display. The Selenite Pro, on the other hand, has a 17.3-inch 1080p IPS panel with a 144Hz or 240Hz refresh rate. There’s no option for an OLED screen with the Selenite Pro, unfortunately.

When it comes to performance, both the Onyx Pro and Selenite Pro feature an Intel Core i7-9750H processor paired with up to 32GB of RAM. There are also two GPU options for either laptops: an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060, or a beefier RTX 2070 GPU. Needless to say, you will be able to play AAA titles quite seamlessly with these gaming laptops.

Oh, by default, the Onyx Pro and Selenite Pro also come with a 512GB NVMe SSD. Of course, these being Illegear products, you can customise the laptops’ specifications to your liking.

Design wise, the chassis of the Onyx Pro and Selenite Pro are made out of magnesium alloy, which is the very reason why they are so lightweight. According to Illegear, a layer of protective coating is also applied to “preserve the look and feel” of the chassis.

While we’re on the topic of design, it’s worth noting the webcam position of the Onyx Pro and Selenite Pro. Since the top bezel is so thin, the webcam had to be placed…right below the display. It’s not a flattering angle, but hey, it supports Windows Hello.

The Illegear Onyx Pro and Selenite Pro are now available for pre-order in Malaysia, and they are expected to ship on 17 December. The Onyx Pro retails from RM6,499, while the Selenite Pro starts at RM6,699. More information on these gaming laptops can be found on Illegear’s website.
