The Incredibly Light Acer Swift 5 Arriving in Malaysia 19 November

Initially unveiled at IFA 2019 a couple of months back, the new Acer Swift 5 is now confirmed to be coming to Malaysia on 19 November. Weighing merely 990g, the Swift 5 is easily one of the lightest productivity laptops in the market now.

That’s right, the Swift 5 tips the scales at only 990g, which is ridiculously light for a 14-inch laptop. I’ve spent a brief time with the Swift 5 back in September, and just holding up the laptop felt unreal. It’s really quite impressive just how lightweight this machine is.

Despite weighing so little, the Swift 5 doesn’t compromise on performance: it’s powered by Intel’s latest 10th generation Ice Lake chips, with the highest-end configuration being the Core i7-1065G7 processor. On top of that, it also has an Nvidia GeForce MX250 GPU or Intel’s integrated Iris Pro Graphics.

Although the MX250 GPU isn’t awfully powerful, it should be more than capable to run a number of games like Dota, Diablo III, and even Fortnite – with reduced graphics settings – at a reasonable frame rate. Plus, for a laptop this lightweight and thin, it’s pretty impressive how Acer managed to fit in an MX250 into the chassis.

Oh, right, the Swift 5 measures only 14.95mm thin. Thankfully enough, despite the slim chassis, this productivity laptop still comes with a good selection of ports. It has two full-size USB-A ports, a USB-C connection with Thunderbolt 3 support, and an HDMI output.

Thanks to the thin bezels surrounding the 14-inch 1080p IPS touch display, the Swift 5 looks like a proper, modern productivity laptop; the overall footprint of the laptop is reduced accordingly too. When I tested the Swift 5 a couple of months back, the display certainly looks pleasant with a good level of brightness and punchy colours.

Rounding out the specifications of the Swift 5 include up to 512GB of SSD storage, a fingerprint reader, and an impressive quoted battery life of up to 12.5 hours. It’ll be interesting to see if it can really deliver this level of battery life in a full review of the laptop.

The Acer Swift 5 will be launched in Malaysia next week on 19 November. There’s no word yet on exactly how much it will cost on our shores, but for the US market, this laptop retails from $900 – that’s about RM3,730. If the Swift 5 retails in the same price range here, it would be quite the attractive productivity machine.
