Honor 9X Launching in Malaysia 21 November
November 12, 2019 Andrew Cheng

After much teasing, we finally know exactly when the Honor 9X will be coming to Malaysia. Set to be launched here on 21 November, it’ll be interesting to see how much the mid-range smartphone will cost on our shores.

As a point of comparison, the Honor 9X retails at 299 euro in the European market, which comes up to about RM1,365. However, given that this pricing includes VAT, it should be more affordable in other markets like Malaysia. In fact, we reckon the 9X will be priced below the RM1,000 mark.

After all, the Honor 9X is actually based on an existing smartphone in our market. That’s right, it’s almost identical to the Huawei Y9 Prime 2019, which went for RM899 at launch. As mentioned in our hands-on of the 9X, both smartphones share the same STK-LX3 model number.

That’s also one reason how the Honor 9X still ships with Google’s range of services and apps despite Huawei’s ongoing fiasco with the US government. These include the indispensable Play Store, YouTube, Google Maps, Gmail, and so on. Rest assured, you’ll get the full Android experience with this smartphone.

Despite its similarities with the Huawei Y9 Prime 2019, the Honor 9X does have one distinct difference: it comes with a more sophisticated triple camera system, thanks to the 48MP f/1.8 main shooter. The other two sensors remain unchanged, including an 8MP f/2.4 ultra-wide angle shooter, and a 2MP f/2.4 depth sensor.

What about the selfie camera? Well, the 16MP f/2.2 front-facing shooter is hidden right behind the display via a pop-up mechanism. As a result, the whole front of the Honor 9X has a sleek, all-screen design. There’s no notch or hole-punch cutout to distract your viewing experience.

Speaking of which, the Honor 9X has a rather sizeable 6.59-inch 2340 x 1080 IPS FullView display. Sure, the 1080p resolution doesn’t sound particularly enticing, but it will help in the battery life department. Packing a generous 4,000mAh cell, this phone should be able to return above average battery life.

Other specifications of the Honor 9X include 6GB of RAM, 128GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot (it can accommodate cards up to 512GB), a rear fingerprint sensor, and EMUI 9.1 based on Android 9 Pie out of the box.

The Honor 9X will make its Malaysian debut on 21 November next week. Hopefully, it will retail below the RM1,000 mark – it should make for an interesting mid-range smartphone if it is priced as such.
