Garmin Venu Smartwatch Launches in Malaysia for RM1,799
October 7, 2019 Andrew Cheng

Last month, Garmin launched the Fenix 6 smartwatches on our shores, which are made for the most dedicated of fitness folks, If you want something more…toned down, the Garmin Venu is just for you, and it has just been introduced in Malaysia.

Unlike other Garmin smartwatches, the Venu sports a vibrant 1.2-inch 390 x 390 AMOLED touch display, giving it the look and functionality of a conventional smartwatch. On top of that, it also has an always on display, so you can just glance at it to check the time.

Of course, the Venu is still a Garmin smartwatch, so fitness-centric features remain a big part of the wearable. The Venu is able to track over a dozen different activities, including a wide range of cardio workouts, yoga, pilates, and even strength training.

Those who need help with some of the exercises will be happy to know that the Venu can also show animated workouts demonstrating the proper form of the movements step-by-step. In fact, under the strength section, it even has animations of core workouts like deadlift and bench press.

This attention to detail on the Venu’s fitness capabilities is really quite impressive; Garmin surely knows a thing or two in this particular aspect.

What is not so impressive, however, is the build quality of the device. While the bezel is made out of stainless steel – with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protecting the display – the case itself is made out of “fibre-reinforced polymer with polymer rear cover.” Basically, that’s plastic, and it doesn’t exactly feel very premium.

Despite the plasticky feel of the Venu, I’m positive this is a durable smartwatch. Plus, the plastic case also makes it a lightweight wearable, so you wouldn’t particularly feel its presence on your wrist. Rated for 5 ATM, the Venu can be used while showering, swimming, or snorkeling as well.

Other specifications of the Venu include up to five days of battery life in GPS mode, the ability to stream music to an audio source – it can supposedly store “up to 500 songs” – a Pulse OX sensor to measure your blood oxygen level, GPS, and of course, a heart rate sensor.

The Garmin Venu will be available for purchase in Malaysia from 9 October onwards, and it is offered in four different variants: Black with Slate hardware, another Black model but with Gold hardware instead, Light Sand, and Granite Blue. As for pricing, the Venu retails at RM1,799.

It’s a steep price tag for a wearable, but given its feature set and fitness capabilities, the Venu may be worth the price premium for certain folks. After all, not many smartwatches can offer the same features.
