The Redmi Note 8 series was launched in China about three weeks ago, and there’s a good chance the device will be arriving here in Malaysia in the near future. After all, the Redmi Note 8 has already been registered with SIRIM, which usually means it will be introduced in our market soon.

Registered under Xiaomi Malaysia with the model number M1908C3JG on 13 September, this should be the regular Redmi Note 8. The Pro variant, on the other hand, doesn’t appear to be in SIRIM’s database just yet.

Given that both devices are part of the same series, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to assume that the Redmi Note 8 and Note 8 Pro will be launched here together. Plus, it’s the Pro model that’s the more interesting device of the two; it would be quite odd to not bring in that particular device.

Interestingly, there are two other smartphones registered under Xiaomi Malaysia with the model numbers M1908C3IG and M1908C3KG. A quick Google search shows that these two devices could be the yet to be released Redmi 8 and Redmi 8A, which are slated to be launched in India on 25 September.

Chances are, now that they’ve been registered with SIRIM, the Redmi 8 and Redmi 8A should be coming to Malaysia as well. Of course, it remains to be seen exactly when this could happen, or if they’ll be introduced alongside the Redmi Note 8 series on our shores.

To recap, the Redmi Note 8 is a reasonably well-equipped mid-range smartphone. It features a 6.3-inch 1080p notched display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 chipset paired with up to 6GB of RAM, 64GB or 128GB of internal storage, a quad camera system (48MP primary + 8MP wide angle + 2MP macro + 2MP depth), a 13MP selfie shooter, and a 4,000mAh battery.

As for the higher-end Redmi Note 8 Pro, it has a larger 6.53-inch 1080p notched display, a MediaTek Helio G90T chipset – it’s the first device to debut with this SoC – paired with up to 8GB of RAM, two storage options (64GB or 128GB), a generous 4,500mAh battery, and a liquid cooling system.

In the camera department, the Redmi Note 8 Pro is also equipped with a quad camera system. The only difference is the primary shooter, which is a more sophisticated 64MP sensor. The selfie camera is also upgraded accordingly to a 20MP shooter.

There’s no word yet from Xiaomi Malaysia on the local launch of the Redmi Note 8 series, but we reckon it’s only a matter of time before we hear from the company. There’s a good chance the Redmi 8 and Redmi 8A will make their way here too; we’ll keep our eyes peeled on the local availability of these smartphones.
