If you’re looking to get an affordable fitness band, consider this: Honor Malaysia just launched its latest wearable on our shores, the Honor Band 5. Retailing at only RM149, this fitness band is priced at the exact same price point as its (arguably) biggest competition, the Xiaomi Mi Band 4.

For that kind of money, the Honor Band 5 offers a 0.95-inch 240 x 120 AMOLED display, a 100mAh battery that promises up to 14 days of battery life, a heart rate sensor, and a 5 ATM water resistance rating; it can be submerged up to 50m underwater for 10 minutes.

Interestingly, while the Honor Band 5 is capable of measuring your blood oxygen level – which will prove to be useful to check if you can handle more strenuous workouts – the model for our market…does not support the feature. While the measurement probably won’t be awfully accurate, it would have certainly been a nice feature to have.

Of course, as a fitness band, the Honor Band 5 can track various workouts as well. According to the company, this wearable has 10 distinct “fitness modes,” which include running, cycling, swimming, and even free training. Once you’re done with your workout, the Band 5 will present to you a number of data, including your heart rate, workout time, distance, and speed.

I managed to play around with the Honor Band 5 for a brief period of time, and it’s really quite an impressive fitness band. The AMOLED display, for one, is bright and vibrant. Thanks to the inherent characteristic of AMOLED panels, you’re getting very deep blacks here too.

Performance wise, I didn’t notice any stutter or lag while operating the Honor Band 5. I can scroll through the menu seamlessly, and it is responsive enough to not feel sluggish. I also love the fact that display (and the chassis itself) has a slight curvature to better fit your wrist – very ergonomic.

However, if I were to nitpick, I’d say the strap itself could be better. Now, it’s not like the strap is flawed in any way, but I do wish it was a little bit softer to improve comfort. That being said, I only strapped it to my wrist for a brief moment; it wouldn’t be fair to judge the comfort of the wearable based on this alone.
