Redmi Note 8 Series with 64MP Camera & Helio G90T Coming on 29 August
August 22, 2019 Andrew Cheng

It seems like Redmi is gearing up to launch the successor to the budget-friendly Redmi Note 7. To be specific, the Chinese company will be introducing two new devices under the Redmi Note 8 series: the standard Redmi Note 8, and the Redmi Note 8 Pro.

Both of them will be unveiled at the same time next week on 29 August, though the differences between the two models have not been detailed yet. That being said, MediaTek has confirmed that the Pro variant will come with the chipmaker’s new Helio G90T chipset.

Built on a 12nm process, the G90T isn’t quite as power-efficient as its competition. Take the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 and Huawei’s Kirin 810 chipsets: they are built on 8nm and 7nm processes respectively. This, in turn, means that the G90T may not offer quite as good battery life – in theory, of course.

Nonetheless, when it comes to performance, MediaTek claims that the G90T is superior to its competition. Compared to the Snapdragon 730, for example, the G90T is said to be up to 26% faster. Without a doubt that’s a bold claim, especially against a Qualcomm SoC.

Chipset aside, Redmi is teasing that the Note 8 Pro will feature a quad camera system with a 64MP primary sensor. In comparison, its predecessor “only” had a 48MP camera. Chances are, the 64MP sensor will use pixel-binning to shoot in 16MP instead, which will improve camera performance; especially in low light conditions.

So what about the standard Redmi Note 8? Well, it will supposedly feature a quad camera system too, but it’s unlikely to come with the same 64MP sensor. Instead, it’s said to be equipped with a 48MP primary camera instead, much like its predecessor.

Given that the two smartphones will be launching soon, Redmi itself started revealing more of the phone’s design. In fact, the company even posted a video on Weibo with quick shots of the upcoming phone. Looking at these snippets, it’s likely that the Redmi Note 8 smartphones will be the most premium offerings of the series yet.

The Redmi Note 8 series will be launching on 29 August 2019 next week. While there’s no news yet on the Malaysian availability of the upcoming smartphones, we reckon they will be arriving here in the near future. After all, most Redmi devices are sold on our shores officially.
