You Can Shoot Landscape Videos Vertically with the Motorola One Action
August 18, 2019 Andrew Cheng

Motorola recently launched a rather interesting mid-range smartphone. This is the Motorola One Action, and one of its most unique features is the ability to record landscapes videos…while holding the phone vertically. How cool is that?

This is accomplished with the 16MP f/2.2 wide angle sensor of the Motorola One Action’s triple camera system. The 16MP shooter is physically rotated so that it will record videos in landscape orientation when you’re holding the phone vertically, and vice versa. It’s a little bit odd, but not having to hold the phone horizontally when recording wide angle videos may be a good selling point to some – or many – consumers.

Anyway, the 16MP f/2.2 sensor has a 117-degree field of view, so you can shoot wide angle videos like…well, an action camera. Of course, you can also take still images with the sensor, though you’ll have to get used to photographing in vertical orientation to get those wide angle landscape shots.

Complementing the wide angle camera are two other sensors that are decidedly more ordinary. The primary shooter is a 12MP f/1.8 unit, while the other 5MP f/2.2 sensor is for capturing depth information. There’s no telephoto sensor here, but personally, we find more use out of a wide angle camera anyway.

Interestingly, the One Action also has a 6.3-inch 1080 LTPS “CinemaVision” display with a hole-punch cutout and 21:9 aspect ratio. It’s a unique feature, given that there aren’t that many smartphones with a similar aspect ratio, except for the Sony Xperia 1 and Xperia 10 devices.

While the 21:9 aspect ratio makes the One Action taller than your usual smartphone with a similar display size, Motorola does say it is ideal for watching movies in their “original ultrawide format” – you won’t get black bars on the top and bottom. The phone maker further elaborated that this aspect ratio allows for more comfortable one-handed use.

Oddly enough, Motorola isn’t going with a Qualcomm or MediaTek chipset with the One Action. Instead, it’s packing a Samsung Exynos 9609 SoC, which seems to be a rather capable mid-range chip. Rounding out the specifications of the One Action are 4GB of RAM, 128GB of expandable storage, a rear fingerprint sensor, and a 3,500mAh battery.

Of course, this One Action is also an Android One device, so it runs on a very stock version of Android – perfect for Android purists.

The Motorola One Action is certainly a unique mid-range smartphone, and it is now available in Brazil, Mexico, and other European countries starting at 259 euro, which comes up to about RM1,200. Also, it’s worth noting that the mid-ranger has actually been registered with SIRIM under Lenovo Malaysia with the model number XT2013-2.

Now that it’s been certified with SIRIM, there’s a very good chance the Motorola One Action will be made available in Malaysia. As always, we will keep a close eye on the local availability of the One Action.
