Oppo Reno 2 with 20x Zoom Launching on 28 August
August 17, 2019 Andrew Cheng

It hasn’t been that long since the Oppo Reno series was introduced to the market, but it seems like the Chinese company is preparing to launch its successor very soon. Based on the phone’s teaser image, the Oppo Reno 2 will be made official on 28 August in India.

Compared to its predecessors, which only had two or three rear camera sensors – the Reno and Reno 10x Zoom respectively – the Reno 2’s has a quad camera system, which appears to be more sophisticated. While the exact specifications of the camera configuration have not been revealed yet, there’s a good change it will feature a telephoto lens, a wide angle sensor, and of course, a primary shooter.

On top of that, Oppo will likely retain the periscope-style lens arrangement found in the Reno 10x Zoom model for the telephoto sensor. Interestingly, the company also claims that the Reno 2 will sport better zoom capability: it can supposedly do 20x zoom now.

That does sound really impressive, though that level of zoom is likely achieved with a combination of optical and digital zoom. After all, that’s the same method the Reno 10x Zoom used for its 10x hybrid zoom feature.

So that leaves the fourth camera sensor, which we suspect could either be a time-of-flight (ToF) sensor for better depth perception, or a macro lens for close-up shots. However, this is only an educated guess on our part at this point in time.

Not surprisingly, much like its predecessor, the Reno 2 will come with a motorised camera system; even the “shark fin” shape of the module is retained. With this in mind, the upcoming phone should sport an all-screen design without a notch or hole-punch cutout. It’ll be interesting to see if the bottom bezel would be reduced on the new device too.

Other specifications of the Reno 2 have not been revealed yet – or how many devices the series will debut with – but it’s rumoured to feature an AMOLED display, an in-screen fingerprint sensor, and a 4,000mAh battery. All in all, hardware you’d expect in a flagship smartphone.

The Oppo Reno 2 will be officially introduced in India on 28 August 2019. While there’s no word yet if the device will be made available outside of the country, there’s a good chance it will reach our shores as well – Oppo does have a quite the presence here in Malaysia.
