Qualcomm just took the wraps off the Snapdragon 855+, which is basically a faster variant of the original Snapdragon 855. Both the CPU and GPU of the Snapdragon 855+ are overclocked, and in the case of the latter, Qualcomm claims that you can expect up to 15% increase in gaming performance.

On top of that, the new Snapdragon 855+ will be found in devices releasing later this year, which also include the much anticipated Asus ROG Phone 2 gaming smartphone.

Compared to the standard Snapdragon 855, the new Snapdragon 855+ still features the same Adreno 640 GPU; it has just been overclocked to return up to 15% better performance. It may not be a new GPU, but that is a pretty noticeable performance gain.

As for the CPU, the Kryo 485 “Prime” core in the Snapdragon 855+ is now clocked at up to 2.96GHz instead of 2.84GHz. That’s not a wildly different clock speed, but it should provide some increase in CPU performance.

It’s worth noting that Qualcomm did not specifically mention how much performance gain you can expect from the overclocked CPU. The company only say that you can expect “an uplift in CPU performance.”

Beyond these two differences, the Snapdragon 855+ is basically identical to the original chipset. It still comes with the same number of cores, it is still a 7nm chip, and it still has support for Quick Charge 4+. Given that the GPU performance gain is the most noticeable change, Qualcomm is marketing the 855+ as a chipset “built for gaming.”

And with that in mind, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to assume that most gaming smartphones releasing later this year will come with the Snapdragon 855+. In fact, Asus itself has confirmed that the upcoming ROG Phone 2 will be powered by the new chipset.

Looking at supposed leaked images of the ROG Phone 2, it doesn’t seem to be drastically different from its predecessor in terms of design. Thankfully, there’s no notch or hole-punch cutout on the display. Instead, the upcoming phone will be sticking with traditional bezels, though they do appear to be a little bit smaller than the original ROG Phone‘s bezels.

Even though its design doesn’t seem to be remarkably different, the ROG Phone 2’s display is a lot faster. Asus confirmed that the new device will be sporting a 120Hz display instead of a 90Hz one, which puts it in the same league as the Razer Phone 2.

Unfortunately, other specifications of the ROG Phone 2 are still relatively unknown.

Nonetheless, the Asus ROG Phone 2 will be officially unveiled next week on 23 July. If you’re wondering, we were also told that the gaming smartphone will be making its way into Malaysia. Rest assured, we’ll be keeping a close eye on the local availability of the ROG Phone 2.
