If you’re currently using a 15-inch MacBook Pro (Mid-2015 model) with a Retina screen, you should check if it’s affected by Apple’s battery recall program. Announced only a couple of weeks ago, the recall concerns MacBook Pros with batteries that “may overheat and pose a fire safety risk.”

Needless to say, you should definitely check if you’re affected by the recall; it poses a serious safety issue. If you’re wondering what could potentially happen, well, one unfortunate MacBook Pro owner found out the hard way.

First spotted by PetaPixel, designer Steve Gagne accounts how his 15-inch MacBook Pro’s battery “blew” in a Facebook post. According to Gagne, it was enough to set a small fire, which filled his house with smoke. Looking at the images of the MacBook Pro after the incident, the damage is quite severe.

More importantly, it’s worth noting that the MacBook Pro wasn’t even actively used when it all happened. Gagne wrote that the laptop was unplugged, with the screen closed, and it was in sleep mode. However, it’ll be interesting to see if the same would’ve happened if it was shut down completely.

Then again, most folks would just put their laptops in sleep mode – it’s a lot more convenient than to shut it down.

Basically, if you’ve got a Mid-2015, 15-inch MacBook Pro, it’s best to check with Apple here if your particular model is eligible for a free battery replacement. Apple said that affected units were sold “primarily between September 2015 and February 2017.”

Those that purchased a 15-inch MacBook Pro in that time period should definitely check if their particular unit is affected; it would take between one to two weeks to get the battery replaced. That’s quite a lengthy time frame, but safety is of utmost priority here.

The 2015 MacBook Pro was – well, still is – considered to be the “best” MacBook released by Apple. Unlike the latest crop of MacBook laptops, the 2015 model has a much better selection of ports (no dongle life!), superior keyboard, and it doesn’t cost quite as much as its successors.

Again, check here with Apple to see if your 15-inch MacBook Pro is eligible for a free battery replacement. It may be a hassle to send it in for service, but hey, you’re getting a brand new battery here. Plus, you can’t really put a price on safety.
